Brazilian Law in Plain English
Services
Advisory
Perhaps you’re getting married and want to know how inheritance, alimony and divorce work, just in case. You could be starting a business in Brazil, and would like to know what tax and labor liabilities you might incur. Maybe you’re renting an apartment, and want me to take a look at the contract the landlord sent you.
Ideally, I’ll have the opportunity to advise you as a preventative measure—an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Either way, my goal to help you understand the legal ramifications of your situation to empower you to make informed decisions in your own interest.
Representation
If you require further assistance after our initial consultation, I’ll send you a proposal detailing how I can assist you in achieving your personal or business goals.
This can include legal remedies like filing or responding to law suits, out-of-court solutions such as communicating on your behalf to help resolve a dispute, representing you in a transaction, or preparing an immigration or naturalization application.
Referrals & Liason
For areas of law outside my expertise, I will first give you generalist advice based on my knowledge of the issue and then refer you to a specialist attorney who can provide more in-depth assistance. This referral service is included in the cost of the initial consultation.
I can also serve as a liason between you and the specialist attorney as the case moves forward.
Schedule your initial consultation
Whether you’re looking for one-time advice or ongoing representation in a dispute, all types of legal assistance that I offer start with an initial paid consultation via videoconference, which can be scheduled through Calendly.
Due to cultural and other differences, those from the US may find the Brazilian legal services sector frustrating to navigate. There’s the language barrier, and a workflow that tends to be based around specific deliverables, such as filing a court case. This means that my clients often come to me after several confusing interactions, but still don’t know what their options are.
My practice is designed to allow you to quickly and efficiently access high-quality legal advice in plain English, from a native speaker.
About me
Born and raised in San Francisco, I first came to Brazil in 2008 as an intern at the US Embassy in Brasília. Understanding Brazil was a great challenge that I eventually made into my career. After 5 years of studying Brazilian law in Portuguese at one of São Paulo’s most prestigious universities, I was admitted to the bar and am licensed to practice throughout Brazil.
